Kings Beach – Let the salt be 🌊

Where would the salt go? Our questions about the wall

Someone at the meeting did some sums and we have checked them on a few different phones. Dam Kings Beach say about 847 tonnes of salt a year comes off the beach and they say the wall will last more than 50 years, so if the wall works the way they say it does that is:

42,350 tonnes of salt

sitting behind a concrete wall at Kings. A big semi trailer carries about 25 tonnes so that's around 1,700 semi loads, and as far as we can see there is no road to the beach, only the track and the stairs.

All their document says is "Options for its long-term storage and removal are still being assessed", so here are our questions.

  1. Where does the salt go?
  2. If it stays in the sand, what does that do to the sand, and the plants behind the beach?
  3. What happens to all that salt in a flood?
  4. Could it get into the groundwater?
  5. If the wall ever fails, does it all go into the ocean in one go?
  6. Who pays to empty it, and for how long?
  7. Is it the same salt as the salt in the ocean or is it different salt?

We're not accusing anyone of anything, we just think these should be answered before anyone pours any concrete.
